During the May Day holiday, the "Wonder Loop" autonomous minibus route in Guiyang's Guanshanhu district became a popular attraction, drawing nearly 400 passengers per day eager to experience the city's futuristic smart mobility service.
Developed by Guizhou Pixing Moving Co, the driverless minibuses operate along an 8-kilometer route linking major commercial complexes, urban parks, and residential communities in Guanshanhu. A one-way trip takes about 20 minutes.
Unlike conventional vehicles, the compact autonomous buses have no steering wheel, accelerator, or brake pedals. Equipped with panoramic windows and seating for six passengers, the vehicles offer an immersive sightseeing experience that has attracted both residents and tourists during the holiday rush.
After passengers fasten their seat belts, a safety operator starts the vehicle with a tap on a tablet. The minibuses navigate city streets smoothly and can automatically avoid obstacles and passing vehicles. Visitors praised the ride for its comfort and advanced technology.
Each vehicle is designed as a multifunctional mobile space capable of hosting karaoke, gaming, and even intangible cultural heritage experiences. According to the project team, the concept aims to transform autonomous vehicles from simple transportation tools into flexible lifestyle spaces such as mobile cafes, offices, and dressing rooms.
The innovative design has already received international recognition, winning Germany's prestigious iF Design Award. The autonomous vehicle was previously tested on public roads in Chemnitz, becoming one of the city's first fully autonomous public road demonstrations.
