The Shijicheng sub-district of Guanshanhu district in Guiyang – capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province – recently launched a series of publicity activities to promote garbage sorting and environmental protection.

In July, the sub-district began directing staff to participate each day in online knowledge contests themed on garbage sorting, in a bid to raise public awareness of the need for improved household rubbish classifications.

A total of 255 contestants participated in the online competition, which was understood to have substantively increased their knowledge of the subject and how it can materially change the lives of locals.

In addition, on-site garbage sorting promotional activities were held for residents.

Volunteers handed out promotional materials and explained the classification categories – including hazardous garbage, recyclables, kitchen waste and other forms of refuse. They also answered questions raised by residents.

Through the on-site activities, residents physically participated in garbage sorting and received supervision on improving their habits.

Local officials said these kinds of activities have raised people's awareness of the need to protect the environment and have been successful in spreading the word about a low-carbon lifestyle.
